Care and indications
AVOID
- Sun or sunshine exposure (beach days, field trips, places where the temperature is higher than 22o).
- Fatty, spicy, or irritating foods.
- You should avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously or touching the treated area (especially with your tongue) after the dental procedure.
- Reduce your activities on the main day of the dental procedure.
- Slight bleeding or redness in the saliva is to be expected as the wound is completely closed. Therefore, intense to moderate exercise should be avoided.
- Household chores (sweeping, dusting, washing).
- Cooking (boiling, baking, frying, grilling, etc.).
- The swelling that is normally expected is usually proportional to the procedure performed. Swelling around the mouth, cheeks, eyes, and sides of the face is not uncommon. This is the body’s normal reaction to the procedure. The swelling will not become apparent until the next day and will peak until two to three days after the procedure. However, the swelling can be drastically reduced by immediate and prolonged use of ice packs on the face and inside the mouth.
You must attempt:
- Taking your prescribed medications immediately after your procedure.
- Placing ice packs on the sides of the face where the surgery was performed.
- Sucking on ice or eating lemon ice cream or any other flavor (not milk-based ice cream).
- Sleeping semi-seated for the first two nights.
- Keeping a very good hygiene (brushing in all areas of the mouth and using interdental floss).
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
In the vast majority of cases, it is possible to remove all wisdom teeth in a single dental appointment, as long as you feel comfortable during the extraction procedure and without discomfort, otherwise it will be preferable to perform it in two appointments.
Between two and three days, however, the time will depend on the specialist’s criteria, whether the procedure was simple or complex is crucial in determining the recovery time. In general, you can have activities such as office work that do not involve great physical effort, speak in moderation and do not expose yourself to the sun or sunshine as on a day at the beach.
It all depends on the type of treatment to be performed and how many teeth are going to be extracted. From a simple extraction, the consultation could last from 10 to 20 minutes or even less, a complex extraction takes from 30 to 40 minutes and a surgical extraction from 30 minutes to 1:30 hrs.
- Mechanical problems. As the force of a tooth to erupt lasts until the root is fully formed, these molars can push and misalign existing teeth. They can also lead to entrapment of the second molars in front of them.
- Neuromuscular problems. The pressure exerted on the second molars can cause severe pain and imbalance to the chewing forces, causing malfunction and pain in the temporomandibular joint (jaw joint). Some patients report headaches that may be due to pressure exerted by the molars when unsuccessfully trying to erupt.
- Cystic and tumor problems. When the molars become trapped, cysts are likely to form around them, causing the destruction of the bone around the molar. Occasionally, odontogenic tumors (tumors of dental origin) such as ameloblastoma, an extremely aggressive tumor that can reach considerable dimensions, could grow inside these cysts.
